What is my creative back-story?
(click on any photo to start slideshow)

Son of a son of a son of a sailor.

As a Great Lakes sailor for 40 years (now retired) Frank was inspired by the variety and use of knots and applied rope work to create some unique pieces.

He started carving wood at about age 8 while hanging out with his grandfather and other local fisherman who taught him to find what was hidden within the block of wood.

In January of 2016, inspired by Nova Scotia's marine culture, Frank tried his hand at stone carving using various diamond tools to create whales from various types of stone. Most pieces are  8” to 10” long and mounted on driftwood.

In keeping with the sea creature theme, Frank has carved out a few flounder from different types, colour and textured stones.  They average 8” in length  and either lay flat or can be hung on a wall.

With the abundance of white granite in the area, it just came naturally to try carving snowy owls. Depending on the stone, they stand 5” to 7” tall. Though somewhat similar, each bird is of slightly different size and exhibits it's own personality.

Occasionally the stone says “ I'm a polar bear” and has to be relieved of its confines. As these are a bit more challenging, only a few have been made.

Being on the water most of his life, he also carves small sail boats from
(hard to find) two tone stones using the natural division of the two types of stone to delineate the hull and sails.

Thanks for showing Minaz and myself around yesterday. You have an amazing place. We laugh that I still managed to get a stone to take home with me. He is sitting with me at the gate right now. When the whale gets home he will find a place and then he will give me his name. I'll let you know. Have a great yellow balloon day. I'll pass sunshine your way. Cheers. Lori Gibson.
